Letter Title: “Ramadan

Every year Muslims around the globe anticipate the blessed month of Ramadan with excitement and joy. Ramadan marks a time of elevated spirituality, with Muslims taking the time to reflect inwards and focus on improving on every aspect of their life as they fast throughout the month. Fasting is present in all religions as refraining from food and physical survival shifts life’s focus to a spiritual connection. “O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous” [2:184] Hunger and thirst are not the objective of fasting, rather it is to engage in the remembrance of God, to serve the weak and the poor, and thus nourish the soul. In fact, it is related that during Ramadan, Prophet Muhammad’s “own concern for and care of the poor, the needy, the sick, and the orphan was intensified manifold, and that his charity knew no limit”. (Bukhari and Muslim).

Prophet Muhammad stated, “Fasting is a shield; so the day one of you fasts, he should not indulge in foul talk nor should he shout. And if someone abuses him or fights with him, he should simply say to him, ‘I am fasting, I am fasting’.” (Bukhari and Muslim) During Ramadan, fasting allows the individual to focus and highlight on aspects of their life they wish to improve, whether that be their spiritual connection, working on their patience, taking the time to volunteer and serve their community, and so on.

The Holy Quran states, “The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was sent down as a guidance for mankind with clear proofs of guidance and discrimination.” [2:186] This verse signifies Ramadan as being a chosen month of fasting and spiritual advancement for all believers. The world has drastically changed this past year, and with so many of our fellow Americans facing hard times, the month of Ramadan has come at a time when we have ample opportunity to try and help alleviate the difficulties of all those in need.
