Letter Title: “Shahadat / Martyrdom

Do you know a person can attain the status of Shahadat or Martyrdom from being killed by a plague like Coronavirus? There is a general thinking that in Islam a Muslim can only attain the status of Shaheed (martyr) when martyred in the way of Allah (Jihad). The meaning of Shaheed is not limited to martyrdom. Prophet Muhammad said that there are many kinds of martyrs, including those who die from any of the following: “the plague, cholera, drowning, from fighting in the cause of Allah.”

The founder of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Messiah Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad says, “A person attains to the status of Shaheed, when he worships God while bearing hardship, and when he sacrifices all worldly comfort in the way of His pleasure and worship.”

In Islam, a person who was migrating to another land while escaping persecution and dies during this journey is also considered a martyr. Prophet Muhammad said, “The people who migrate from one land to another due to their faith will be with Jesus at the same level of Paradise.” (Since he also faced persecution and migrated to another land due to his faith and thus was a refugee).

These are some examples of attaining Shahadat or martyrdom in Islam. I hope my readers understand that when extremists use the term martyrdom loosely, they themselves do not understand its real meaning.
