Letter Title: “Sanctity of Life in Islam

September 11, 2021 marks the somber 20th anniversary of the horrific attack on America. The terrorists not only caused death and destruction on September 11, 2001, they also hijacked the religion of Islam. They painted Islam as a violent, militant religion and forever planted a seed of suspicion of all Muslims, but the truth is that terrorists do not represent Islam or all Muslims.

Islam condemns terrorism and extremism. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has advocated for the sanctity of all human life, as emphasized by true Islamic teachings. The Holy Qur’an teaches that life is sacred and that “whosoever killed a person… it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and whoso gave life to one, it shall be as if he had given life to all mankind.” (5:33). In his farewell address, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Even as this month, land and day of Pilgrimage are holy, so has God made the blood, property and honor of every human being sacred.”

The worldwide spiritual leader of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad says, “Islam is that religion which has forever enshrined the universal principles of freedom of religion, freedom of conscience and freedom of belief. Therefore, if today there are so-called Muslim groups or sects that are killing people, it can only be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Their barbaric acts are a complete violation of everything that Islam stands for.”
