Letter Title: “Islam Teaches Mankind Brotherhood, Equality, and Oneness”

After every Friday Sermon a Muslim hears the Quranic admonishment “Verily, Allah enjoins justice, and kindness (doing good to others); and giving like kindred; and forbids indecency, and manifest evil, and wrongful transgression.” (16:91). Justice is the foundation for righteousness. To “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is only the first step that even animals portray, it’s coded in our natural state. Islam tells you to strive further and be kind. Do good to your fellow beings starting with humanity and extending to animals and plants even inanimate things, irrespective of their background and attitude towards you. Yes, even those that are at odds with you. A patient tree is actually a good example as it gives you shade, fresh oxygen, reduces erosion and pollution, and is a home and food for animals regardless of how it’s treated by its environment. We’re asked to adopt this as a moral compass. The final and perfect stage is realization that we’re in fact all limbs of the same body (31:29) and whatever hurts or benefits one of us hurts or benefits all of us. This is where you see your neighbor, a stranger, the poor and dejected, even an opponent as members of your family and you are ready to sacrifice for them as a mother is ready for her own child. This stage takes some spiritual maturity to understand and enact. The best example we have are the Prophets and Messengers who despite the fiercest persecution persisted in conveying the Divine message, praying, and serving only for their salvation here and hereafter.

The Holy Quran reminds us that “Mankind were one community, then they differed among themselves, so Allah raised Prophets as bearers of good tidings and as warners, and sent down with them the Book…” (2:214). This is why Ahmadi Muslims believe in the second coming of the Messiah in Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and hold fast to the spiritual institution of Khilafat or Successorship as the rope of Allah being not divided but unified in obedience under the best kind of leadership gifted from above. This is why a pillar of Islamic action is to perform the Hajj pilgrimage where unadulterated brotherhood, equality, and interconnectedness under God is palpable and life changing, just as it was for Malcolm X. Nowhere in the world will you find a brotherhood more pure and lasting than the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
